What is Specialist Musculoskeletal & Biomechanical Podiatry?
If you’re struggling with foot, ankle, knee or lower limb pain—especially from walking, running or standing—Simon’s specialist musculoskeletal (MSK) and biomechanical approach can help. Using detailed movement analysis, hands-on assessment and expert knowledge of how the body moves, Simon identifies the root cause of pain or injury. Conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, shin splints, flat feet, and knee pain are commonly treated. Following your assessment, Simon may prescribe a fully custom-made orthotic footbed designed to support your individual biomechanics, reduce strain, and help you move more comfortably in day-to-day life.
Things I can Help With
Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain
Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain, often linked to overuse or poor foot mechanics. Simon uses detailed gait analysis to identify the underlying issue and relieve pressure on the plantar fascia. Treatment often includes hands-on therapy and custom orthotic insoles designed to support your arch and improve daily comfort.
Morton’s Neuroma
Morton’s neuroma can cause burning, tingling, or numbness between the toes. Through a combination of foot assessment and movement analysis, Simon identifies the cause of pressure on the nerve. Custom orthotics and footwear advice can help offload the affected area, reduce irritation, and prevent symptoms from returning.
Flat Feet & Overpronation
Flat feet or fallen arches can affect your posture, cause fatigue, and lead to pain in the feet, knees, or back. Simon assesses your gait to understand how your foot functions during movement. He then creates a custom orthotic that supports your arch, reduces strain, and helps correct biomechanical imbalances.
Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD)
PTTD affects the tendon that supports your arch and stabilises the ankle. If left untreated, it can lead to flatfoot and chronic pain. Simon uses biomechanical testing to assess the extent of the issue and may recommend a bespoke orthotic to support the tendon, reduce inflammation, and improve foot alignment.
Shin Splints & Stress-Related Pain
Shin splints are often caused by repetitive strain and poor gait mechanics. Simon performs a full movement and foot function assessment to find out what’s contributing to the pain. Treatment may involve custom orthotics, shock absorption improvements, and advice on footwear or training modifications for faster, safer recovery.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITB)
ITB syndrome causes pain on the outside of the knee, often linked to poor lower limb alignment. By analysing how you walk or run, Simon identifies imbalances that may be increasing strain. A custom insole can help optimise foot and leg mechanics, reducing pressure on the IT band and supporting recovery.
Paediatric Flat Foot & Gait Abnormalities
Flat feet or unusual walking patterns in children can lead to discomfort or long-term issues if left untreated. Simon offers expert paediatric assessment and uses gentle, child-appropriate orthotic solutions to support healthy development. Early intervention can improve posture, prevent pain, and support your child’s confidence in movement.
Knee, Hip & Lower Back Pain (Biomechanical Causes)
Misalignment in the feet can affect the entire kinetic chain—contributing to pain in the knees, hips, or lower back. Simon uses gait analysis to assess how your feet may be impacting your posture and movement. A custom orthotic can rebalance your stride, improve alignment, and ease strain on affected joints.
Rheumatoid & Osteoarthritis – Feet, Ankles & Knees
Arthritis in the feet, ankles, or knees can make everyday movement painful. Simon combines clinical assessment with pressure analysis to identify areas of joint stress. He creates custom foot orthotics to offload painful areas, improve stability, and support better mobility for those living with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid conditions.

About Simon – Specialist Podiatrist
Simon is a highly experienced podiatrist based in Portsmouth and Fareham, with over 20 years of clinical expertise in foot and lower limb musculoskeletal care. After graduating from Southampton University in 2000 with a degree in Podiatry—and receiving the Student of the Year award—Simon began his career at Portsmouth NHS Trust. There, he completed a broad rotational training in all aspects of podiatry before specialising in biomechanics and gait analysis.
Simon went on to work alongside physiotherapists and orthopaedic consultants, managing complex cases involving the hips, knees, and lower back. His role as an extended scope practitioner at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, and later his work at Spire Hospital Southampton where he established a gait lab, reflect his deep commitment to collaborative, multidisciplinary care.
Today, Simon focuses on diagnosing and treating foot and lower limb pain through detailed gait assessments, biomechanical analysis, and custom-made orthotic footbeds. His approach blends hands-on treatment—such as foot mobilisation and shockwave therapy—with personalised rehabilitation plans. Simon also has specialist training in diabetic foot care, using advanced in-shoe pressure analysis to help offload pressure and reduce the risk of complications.
Whether you’re dealing with chronic foot pain, sports injuries, or general movement issues, Simon offers professional, friendly, and personal care aimed at getting you back on your feet—comfortably and confidently.
Your Appointment
For your appointment, please wear something comfortable which allows your feet and ankles to be seen easily during walking. Simon will normally prefer to see your bare feet, but please let him know if you’d prefer to keep your socks on. Please bring any previous orthotics/insoles and the pair of shoes that you wear most often. You’ll fill out a short patient registration form and during your initial consultation, Simon will discuss the following with you:
Relevant medical conditions/issues
Simon will review any existing health conditions that may influence your foot mechanics, healing capacity, or treatment approach.
Your injury history
You’ll discuss previous foot, ankle, or lower-limb injuries to help identify patterns that may contribute to your current symptoms.
The main issue of concern
You’ll outline the primary problem you’re experiencing so Simon can accurately assess its cause and plan appropriate treatment.
Any other areas of concern
This is an opportunity to mention additional discomfort, functional limitations, or questions that may be relevant to your overall foot health.
